This post could apply to ANY reset in your life, home, office, whatever. It was written from the perspective of the BIG life reset. The kind of reset that happens when everything seems to have fallen apart and you don't know which way to go. A divorce several years ago took me to that point, sometimes "life happens" and it can feel like your entire world has been turned upside down.
Your home or immediate surroundings might feel like they're in a tangle, everything is frustrating. Confusion, chaos, and hopelessness are some words that I've used for my own space in times like this. In these times, your mental health wellbeing is at stake and it's critical to regain your balance.
It's ok. It IS OK and it WILL BE OK.
Some important points to think of when it comes to your mindset:
You'll need to give up self-judgment and berating yourself. It's not serving you, it's hindering your progress.
"Slow and Steady Wins the Race" is going to be your mantra for now.
You'll need to be forgiving of yourself AND self disciplined at the same time in order to succeed.
You will need a plan. A concrete black and white written plan.
You will need Self Trust. Some of us never think of this concept or how it affects everything we do. Self Trust is HUGE and absolutely essential. There are some easy ways to build self trust that I will discuss in a future blog post. You can always email me at Roberta@TheSadieLane.com if you feel like you need to talk about it sooner.
Action Steps for Decluttering and Creating Order
Decide on a space to be your "Command Center". This will be where you sit down to write out your plan, this will be your "calm in the storm" spot.
Blitz Fix your Command Center area. Make sure you're only working on a space that can be completed within 30 minutes to one hour depending on your bandwidth for this task. Getting lost in this step would be to get lost before you even really start. It's critical to not overdo this one or become a perfectionist, just do it so you can get on with the larger task at hand.
Write out your plan. Commit to work days and work times just as if you were committing to your employer. Always show up for work. Your plan should be to work in reasonable increments with reasonable expectations. You probably didn't get into this situation overnight and you won't fix it overnight. Slow and Steady Wins the Race.
Create Self Trust by committing to your work schedule and work tasks and following through on the promises you made to yourself. Self Trust will become your super power in supporting endurance and resilience.
Ask IMPORTANT questions of yourself as you work and be prepared to be totally honest. We always know when we are lying to ourselves or making excuses. Self Trust relies on honesty and knowing that you can count on yourself to be real.
Don't try to fix everything all at once. But when you notice something about yourself that is causing the chaos, take note. Do some journaling, think about alternatives or ways that you can change your habits. Then, follow through with one or two of the changes. Again, Slow and Steady Wins the Race.
See this through with an expectation of progress but not perfection. Keep going, don't quit. Call for help when you need it.
